A Stormy Close to the Season
Our season concludes with a return to Beethoven’s monumental Razumovsky Quartets — this time with the striking String Quartet in E minor, Op. 59 No. 2. Darker in colour and more dramatic in spirit than its companions, this quartet opens with two arresting chords that feel like a sudden flash of light. From that instant, Beethoven pulls us directly into a world of tension, urgency, and unexpected beauty.
Across four movements, the music moves between shadow and radiance: haunted harmonies, long lyrical lines that seem to search for resolution, and a finale that erupts into racing three-note figures driving the music toward a storm-filled conclusion. It is one of Beethoven’s most compelling and imaginative chamber works — bold, intimate, and full of emotional depth.
